Abstract

The article is dedicated the origins of the museum sociology – the modern museum activity in Ukraine. From the beginning of 1990s the museum sociology (various aspects of the study of needs, motivations, expectations, behavior, a socio-demographic profile and social categories of museum audiences) has already became the topic of many publications. Thereby the retrospective review on the base of the mentioned publications let to identify the certain periodization of the museum sociology in Ukraine from the beginning of 1990s. In addition, the author of the article identified interest of museologists to museum audiences in different historical periods (18–20 century). Thereby interest of museologists in Ukraine to museum audiences could appear beyond 1990s. Solving the problem of the proposed article its author has analyzed the scientific heritage of the academician of the All-Ukrainian academy of sciences Fedir Shmit (1877–1937) and the historiography of him with the aim to outline books and practice of the scientist that can be regarded as the origins of the museum sociology in Ukraine.
