NADIIA SUROVTSOVA’S PARTICIPATION IN THE FORMATION AND WORK OF THE UKRAINIAN FOREIGN OFFICE IN 1917–1918
Abstract
The article systematizes an earlier stage (1917–1920) in the activities of Nadiia Vitaliivna Surovtsova (1896–1985) – a Ukrainian public figure, translator, writer, journalist, historian, publicist, diplomat and dissident. The study is based on both her personal recollections and letters and works and publications of the researchers. Despite her prominent public effort and service at the Ukrainian Foreign Office, that period of her life has not yet been investigated and properly evaluated. The author analyzes her own memoirs and epistolary legacy, memoirs of Sophiia Rusova and Mykhailo Shkilnyk and reveals her professional and personal contacts during her public and political activities in Petersburg, Uman and Kyiv as well as diplomatic missions in various governmental bodies of the Ukrainian Central Rada (Council), Ukrainian State, the Directorate and the Information Bureau of the UPR diplomatic mission.
