THE VASES OF KYIV-MEZHYHIRIA FAIENCE FACTORY FROM THE COLLECTIONS OF THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF UKRAINIAN HISTORY: RESTORATION AND RESEARCHES
Abstract
The article is dedicated to the problems of research and restoration of the artifacts of Kyiv-Mezhyhiria faience factory – decorative vases from the collection of the National Museum of Ukrainian History. The objects carried the imprints of the previous restoration interventions and other visual expressions of life, which put a number of difficult tasks before the restorer. The objects are of great importance for the collection of the National Museum of Ukrainian History, so it was important to choose the best restoration approaches. Particular attention was paid to finding new techniques for the reproduction of the lost portions of ceramics with complex sculptural reliefs and profiles. In addition, various restoration approaches to the faience monuments are traced: from complete non-interference to the figurative structure of the monument to its maximum reproduction. Restored monuments are an important integral part for the formation of exhibitions devoted to Kyiv-Mezhyhiria faience factory and, therefore, represent the historical heritage of the Ukrainian people’s culture. The subject analyzed by the author raises a number of questions of the methodology of the study of artistic works of Ukrainian porcelain and faience from the 19th and early 20th centuries in the research work of the restorer.
