OLEKSIY YERYMOVYCH – PRIEST, ARCHAEOLOGIST, AND RESEARCHER OF THE CHYHYRYN LAND ANTIQUITIES
Abstract
This article describes O. Yerymovych’s life, who was the prior of the cathedral Khrestovozdvyzhenska church in Chyhyryn. He is considered one of the founders of historical sites protection work in Chyhyryn area. At the beqinning of the 20th century he collected antiquities, carried out archaeological researches and explored sacral buildings. In these years he taught in a one-class church school at Khrystovozdvyzhenska church and in two-class town school. At the same time O. Yerymovych was engaged in active social activities. In 1937 he was repressed and executed by the Bolsheviks power, but in 1991 he was rehabilitated. Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Moscow Patriarchate) сanonized him in 2008. Priest O. Yerymovych got in the communion of saints-martyrs and confessors of the 20th century. Priest Oleksiy Yerymovych took his rightful place among 144 new martyrs of Cherkasy.
