THE THEME “COSSACKS” IN THE PERIODICALS OF THE EARLY 20TH CENTURY AS THE ELEMENT OF DEVELOPMENT OF NATIONAL MEMORY
Abstract
The article deals with the problem of correlation of the Cossack theme and conception of the national memory. The author has analyzed periodicals concerning Ukrainian history of the 16th–18th centuries. The great splash of interest to this subject is observed during in the period of 1905–1914. Thanks to Dmytro Yavornytskyi`s fruitful activity, Katerynoslav became the centre of the Cossack studies. The problems of the Cosack history became the main theme of publications of the weekly “Dniprovi Khvyli” (Waves of the Dnieper). A lot of the publications were dedicated to the historical excurses which had educational significance. They showed that Katerynoslav province was the ancient Cossacks` land. Political articles constituted another group of publications. In these publications the historical past becomes the means of defending the Ukrainian people`s current interests.
