ON THE MAIN STAGES OF ATTIC BLACK-GLAZED POTTERY MANUFACTURING

Abstract

The article reviews the main stages of attic black-glazed classic pottery manufacturing. From this perspective, the main characteristics of the Attic clay, from which black-glazed pottery was made, were estimated and analyzed. The main four phases of ceramics production were singled out, namely the preparation of materials, shaping of pottery, drawing of ornaments and burning. Particular attention is put on the preparation of black-glazed coating, mineralogical and chemical composition, and complex system of burning, which is the main secret of success of ancient Greek craftsmen.
