‘PRIVATE TATARS’ IN UKRAINIAN LANDS OF THE POLISH-LITHUANIAN COMMONWEATH IN THE END OF THE 16th – 18th CENTURY
Abstract
The article is dedicated to private Tatars in Ukrainian lands of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth. Its aim is to describe the features of this service social category and to analyze the involvement of Tatar units into military conflicts during the Cossack uprisings and raids of the Crimeans. The author considers the Tatars of such powerful families as Ostrozhski, Zaslavski, Koretski, Senyavski, Vyshnevetski, and tries to analyze their duties. A number of sources are introduced. They reveal certain aspects of everyday life of Tatars in Volhynia and Podillya, and their participation in wars for boundaries between noble families.
