TYPES AND COLOURS OF WOOLLEN CLOTH IN A MILITARY SUIT OF UKRAINIAN COSSACKS (LATE 16TH – THE FIRST HALF OF THE 17TH CENTURY)
Abstract
The article analyzes written and iconographic sources for the history of varieties and colours of cloth used in the costume of Ukrainian Cossacks in the end of the 16th century and the first half of the 17th century. Different grades of cloth were distinguished, which stood out for the command staff (foreman) of the category of military servants, and ordinary Cossacks. It was found that the most common type of cloth among the clothes of Ukrainian Cossacks was thick, coarse cloth, not painted white or grey. Such a fabric is mentioned and depicted in the sources most often.
